Getting through Applications!

How many schools should I apply to? This question is often asked by persons about to start the application process.

Typically, persons believe it is best to apply to as many schools as possible in order to ensure they have options.  It is important to have options; but, the key question is “How many is too many?”

There is no right or wrong answer for this question. However, to help you decide, let’s take a look at the factors that can influence the application process.
1.      Required Steps
This often involves multiple steps which include but are not limited to a paper application, supporting documentation, references and essays indicating why you are suitable for the school/program. The more institutions you apply to, the more steps you must consider.

2.      Required Documentation
Gathering some of the required documentation may rely on a third party. For example, official transcripts or SAT test scores are usually provided by an institution or an examining board. Therefore, it is critical to factor in the time it may take these third parties to process and dispatch documents to institutions.

3.      Costs
Another factor that persons often forget at the beginning of the process is cost. The college and university application process can be expensive as there are fees associated with different stages. Fees can range from $200 - $1000 (US dollars) and can include application fees for each school, administrative costs, service charges, processing fees and mailing costs.
At The Student Centre, we recognise that the number of schools to apply to will vary by student, based on their academic qualifications, career goals and personal preferences. Over the years, we have devised a reasonable range of schools for our clients to apply to which considers an individual’s circumstance.

Before you commence the application process, research the admission and application procedures and remember to consider your budget.
