The Cost of Higher Education
It is important to be aware and understand the costs associated with college and university. Some of the costs associated with higher education studies include:
- Tuition
- Room and Board
- Books and Supplies
- Living Expenses
- Miscellaneous (personal expenses)

Books and Supplies |
The materials required by the student such as textbooks, laptop or tablet, lab coat, tool kits, software programs etc. |
Varies based on the needs of the student and the type of course and/or program being taken |
Health Insurance |
Coverage of medical and/dental related services to be provided during the student’s studies on an annual basis |
A fixed cost but may vary depending on the institution. In some cases, students may be able to opt out of the insurance plan if they have an alternative that is deemed adequate. |
Incidentals |
School amenities which allow students to access services and facilities. For example, gym, student support, learning support |
Typically, a fixed cost which may at times increase based on inflation. |
Meals |
Dining services provided to student. |
Will vary based on whether student purchased an on-campus meal plan or will self-cater. This is also coupled with any dining off-campus |
Transportation |
This is specific to local ground transportation such as bus, train, car, taxi etc |
Will vary depending on whether the student is living on-campus or off-campus and by the chosen mode of transportation |
Air Travel |
Persons studying abroad will travel by air to their chosen study destination and return home during school breaks |

Immigration |
Fees associated with the application for a study permit and/or visa |
Will vary depending on whether a student has citizenship or will be a foreign or international student |
Miscellaneous |
Personal expenses that will be specific to the student as well as any other additional costs such as clothing, bank fees, mobile fees etc. |
